An Ultimatum
Like an ultimatum, her pedia said that if until two days she is not getting well, we have to go back and she has to be admitted to the hospital. Again, it shakes me from the inside.
Just a month ago, we stayed in the hospital for 2 days and the thought of staying again at the hospital is not a pleasant news. First, i do not want her to have an IV (intravenous / dextrose) it was a struggle before, her veins was too invisible. Second, i and husband agreed that when she has to be admitted, we will (no matter what!) sign again for a waiver, everything but never an IV on her!
Aside from the medication on her colds and flu, she has to be nebulized four times a day or every six hours. She resist being nebulized now, i dont know why. She wails and fights back kicking. Now means sleepless nights again, cause we have to nebulize her when she is at sleep.
I just wish that she gets well soon. Or if i will not be blogging the days after tomorrow, that means we are at the hospital looking after her.
Very sad mommy here.

Baby First Picture
This was Yena's first ever picture taken right after she was pulled out from my womb. I was wishing she was with bloods and all, but the hospital has strict policy with new born photo ops. This was taken by the super proud daddy on that very memorable night.
Now, show me your baby's first ever picture, the one that would make you melt, that photo that can tell a thousand stories, your source of joy inspite of the subsequent pains of labor! Show it and flaunt it!! :)

Breastfeeding
We are well aware that breast milk is still the best for your baby but did you know that the benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition?
Here are some of the benefits of breastfeeding:
1. It offers good nutrition. Breastmilk is all the food and drink the baby needs from birth up to 6 months of age. It has the vital nutrients to help the baby grow and is easily digested and absorbed.
2. It provides immunity and protection against illnesses especially when colostrum is given. Colostrum is the thick, yellowish substance from the breast produced in the first few days after birth. It has antibodies that give immunity and protection against infections, allergies and diseases, resulting to less frequent or less sever infections.
3. It also aids in the contraction of the uterus to normal size and prevents post-delivery bleeding.
4. Also, it provides a natural contraceptive that helps in child spacing allowing the mother's body to 'recover' from the demands of pregnancy. It therefore helps in ensuring the good nutritional and health status of the mother.
5. It lowers risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
6. It helps establish and strengthen emotional bond between baby and mother!

Baby Sleeping Time
When its getting harder to put your baby to sleep, follow these simple guide i know will put your baby to ozzzzzz land.
1. Sponge time - Give her a sponge time before sleeping. A hot bath would do!
2. Reading time - Read to her, show her the pictures of the book, let her touch it and make sounds. Repeat things as you like.. She will definitely enjoy it.
3. Music time - Let her know the difference of sleeping time music to playing time music. Play mellow songs at her bed side.
4. Massage time - Massage her tummy, her back, thighs to toes and hands. It will be very relaxing.

New Born Screening in the Philippines
Last week was New Born Screening Week, even if it was a week due it is never too late to post here some informative Q and A's about New Born Screening. For further info please visit this site.
What is New Born Screening?
Newborn screening (NBS) is a simple procedure to find out if your baby has a congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation and even death if left untreated.
Why is it important to have newborn screening?
Most babies with metabolic disorders look normal at birth. One will never know that the baby has the disorder until the onset of signs and symptoms and more often ill effects are already irreversible.
When is newborn screening done?
Newborn screening is ideally done on the 48th hour or at least 24 hours from birth. Some disorders are not detected if the test is done earlier than 24 hours. The baby must be screened again after 2 weeks for more accurate results.
How is newborn screening done?
Newborn screening is a simple procedure. Using the heel prick method, a few drops of blood are taken from the baby's heel and blotted on a special absorbent filter card. The blood is dried for 4 hours and sent to the Newborn Screening Laboratory (NBS Lab).
How much is the fee for newborn screening?
P550. The DOH Advisory Committee on Newborn Screening has approved a maximum allowable fee of P50 for the collection of the sample.
When are newborn screening results available?
Newborn screening results are available within seven working days to three weeks after the NBS Lab receives and tests the samples sent by the institutions. Results are released by NBS Lab to the institutions and are released to your attending birth attendants or physicians. Parents may seek the results from the institutions where samples are collected. A negative screen mean that the result of the test is normal and the baby is not suffering from any of the disorders being screened. In case of a positive screen, the NBS nurse coordinator will immediately inform the coordinator of the institution where the sample was collected for recall of patients for confirmatory testing.
Where is newborn screening available?
Newborn screening is available in participating health institutions (hospitals, lying-ins, Rural Health Units and Health Centers). If babies are delivered at home, babies may be brought to the nearest institution offering newborn screening.
What are the disorders included in the Newborn Screening Package?
1. Congenital Hypothyroidism (CH) CH results from lack or absence of thyroid hormone, which is essential to growth of the brain and the body. If the disorder is not detected and hormone replacement is not initiated within (4) weeks, the baby's physical growth will be stunted and she/he may suffer from mental retardation.
2. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) CAH is an endocrine disorder that causes severe salt lose, dehydration and abnormally high levels of male sex hormones in both boys and girls. If not detected and treated early, babies may die within 7-14 days.
3. Galactosemia (GAL) GAL is a condition in which the body is unable to process galactose, the sugar present in milk. Accumulation of excessive galactose in the body can cause many problems, including liver damage, brain damage and cataracts.
4. Phenylketonuria (PKU) PKU is a metabolic disorder in which the body cannot properly use one of the building blocks of protein called phenylalanine. Excessive accumulation of phenylalanine in the body causes brain damage.
5. Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (G6PD Def) G6PD deficiency is a condition where the body lacks the enzyme called G6PD. Babies with this deficiency may have hemolytic anemia resulting from exposure to certain drugs, foods and chemicals.

When do baby learn to count?
You possiblly won't believe this one: But according to babyzone, "Babies as young as five months can actually count!"
"Not that they can say, "one, two, three" or count out their favorite stuffed pals one by one— those are toddler skills to look forward to. "
"But by week 24, your child was beginning to grasp primitive math skills. And now, at this age, babies know when a set of two or three events have occurred, and they will anticipate a specific number of next events to take place."
Unbelievably cool! :)

How to raise a happy child
I got this from babycenter and thought to post it here, might help some parents like me on our quest to raise a happy and healthy child.
Read on..
There's no perfect prescription for raising a happy child, but there are some things you can do as a parent to tilt the odds in her favor:
Be responsive to her needs. Your love and compassion go a long way toward making your baby happy. Try to figure out what she's trying to tell you — "I'm tired" or "I'm hungry" — and respond appropriately.
Help your baby feel snug and secure. Hold her close and let her feel your heart beat. Play soft music or sing to her. Rub her tummy. Rock her or let her feel some other gentle, rhythmic motion. Give her something to suck on.
Play together. Babies need lots of "floor time" with you. Responsiveness and affection makes your baby feel confident that you will always support her. This confidence helps your baby develop into an independent, resilient, and happy child.
Talk to your baby. The soothing sound of your voice is a reassuring touchstone for your baby and an indication that you love her and are happy to be with her.

Melamine Scare
With hundreds of babies hospitalized in China because of contaminated milks with melamine, how can we be sure the products we buy for our babies are safe?
Let me share this email i got from a friend..
The whole world is scared of China made "black hearted goods". Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?
Let me tell you..... the first 3 digits of the barcode 690.691.692 is made in CHINA . Do not ever buy it for your own good. 471 is Made in Taiwan. This is our right to know, but the government and related department never educate the public, therefore we have to rescue ourselves.
Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "made in china", so they won't show us which is made from which country. However, you may now refer to the barcode, if the first 3 digits is
690-692 then it is made in China
00~09 - USA & CANADA
30~37 - FRANCE
40~44 - GERMANY
49 - JAPAN
50 - UK
I do not know it its real, but a little double checking on the products we buy would not hurt. Prevention is bettern than cure!
